When Cécile McLorin Salvant walked away with first place in the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, the jazz world’s most prestigious contest, the buzz began almost immediately. If anything, it has intensified in the months leading up to the launch of her Mack Avenue Records debut, WomanChild, which peaked at No. 4 on Billboard's Jazz Albums chart. Not only was she the youngest finalist, but she’s also a mystery woman with the most international background of any of the participants.
In addition to her flamboyant performance of jazz standards, Salvant composes music and lyrics which she also sings in English, French (her native language) and Spanish. Cécile charms her audience with pleasurable stage presence as she performs unique interpretations of unknown and scarcely recorded jazz and blues compositions. Stephen Holden from The New York Times announced that “Ms. McLorin Salvant has it all…. If anyone can extend the lineage of the Big Three—Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald—it is this 23-year-old virtuoso.”...
